October is National Bully Awareness Month

A New Non-Violent Approach to Defusing Bullying Encounters

October is recognized as National Bullying Prevention Month, a time to bring greater awareness to the serious problem of bullying and, more importantly, to encourage people of all ages to learn effective ways to respond to it.

Bullying can happen anywhere—to children at school, teenagers among their peers, in the workplace, online, and even among adults. While many programs focus on reporting bullying or physically defending oneself, there is another important skill that is often overlooked:

How do you defuse a bullying encounter without using physical force?

That is the question that led Tom Ramsey, Conflict Resolution Specialist, to create a new non-physical defense program with a different approach to Bullying entitled, “Slaying the Bullies Training.” This program is designed to teach individuals how to respond to a bully with confidence, awareness, and effective communication rather than immediately resorting to physical confrontation. This defense program teaches the A.B.C.’s of dealing with a bully—giving participants practical Conflict Resolution tools to help recognize a potential threatening encounter and take the necessary steps to de-escalate the situation.

Physical force can sometimes make a difficult situation worse. Learning how to remain calm, communicate effectively, establish boundaries, and recognize opportunities to disengage can provide another option when confronted by someone who is attempting to intimidate, threaten, or bully you. The secret Tom says is to be assertive, stay confident, and defuse the attack before it becomes physical.

For All Ages—including Adults

Bullying isn’t just a child’s issue. Children and teenagers may encounter bullies at school or in social situations. Adults can experience bullying in the workplace, neighborhoods, organizations, social groups, and other environments. That is why “Slaying the Bullies Training” is designed for all ages. Whether you’re a parent wanting to give your child additional tools, a young person learning how to handle difficult encounters, an educator, or an adult dealing with bullying in your own life, learning non-violent conflict-resolution techniques can help you respond more effectively.

Be the Victor – not the Victim

One of the most important messages behind this program is that being victimized does not mean you have to remain powerless. Confidence, awareness, communication, and preparation are powerful tools. The goal of “Slaying the Bullies Training” isn’t to teach people how to fight a bully. It is to teach them how to breathe, think, respond, and make better choices when faced with a bullying encounter. By learning the A.B.C.’s, participants can develop strategies that may help them avoid unnecessary confrontation, reduce escalation, and safely move toward a resolution.

Learn More

This October, during National Bullying Prevention Month, take the opportunity to learn something that could make a difference in your life—or in the life of someone you care about. Don’t just learn how to survive a bullying encounter. Learn how to respond with confidence and control. Be prepared. Be confident. Be in control. Be the victor—not the victim,
